
A gold necklace and Percy Kelly artworks were among the highest selling lots at an auction held by Mitchells in Cockermouth.
The Antiques and Fine Art Sale saw the 18 carat white gold necklace, set with four carats of diamonds, sell for £5,100 – making it the highest selling lot.
Several artworks by Percy Kelly (1918-1993) also did well, the most valuable paintings being a 1967 watercolour of Newlyn Harbour, which made £4,500, Low Tide at Maryport, which sold for £3,600 and a harbour scene with fishing boats, which sold for £2,500.

The biggest surprise in the sale was an 18th century sampler with an intricate floral tapestry design dated 1767 by Hannah Decleve.
A Diligent Scholar’s an Ornament To a School and measuring 42cm x 34cm, the sampler was sold with a second sampler dated 1840 by 11-year-old Susannah Moore for £4,500.
A splendid bronze and ivory figure by the French sculptor Albert Ernest Carrier Belleuse (1824-1887), Liseuse, and measuring 59cm high sold for £1,900

Among the furniture, the highest selling lot was a continental marble topped serpentine marquetry commode sold for £2,000.
A Mouseman oak bookcase with four adjustable shelves and a carved mouse motif also did well selling for £1,100. A late 19th century Japanese lacquer cabinet with extensive inlaid decoration measuring 164cm high made £800 and a cast iron cell patterned garden bench seat sold for £1,500.
Mitchells’ next three-day Antiques and Fine Art Sale will be held from September 13 to 15, with a closing date for entries of August 8.
Entries are now invited for Mitchells’ Vintage & Antique Toy & Model Railway Sale on Thursday August 3 with entries closing on Monday, June 26.
Pop-up charity valuation event
Mitchells is holding a pop-up charity valuation event on Friday, June 23, in aid of St Mary’s Hospice Ulverston hosted by South Lakes valuer David Brookes.
Anyone wishing to have their items valued should simply bring them along to the Cavendish Suite at St Mary’s Hospice on Ford Park Crescent in Ulverston between 10am and 2pm where David will be available to give a free appraisal in return for a donation to support the work of the hospice.
