Carlisle Cathedral has been given a £29,500 boost for its musical activities.
The cash, from the Cathedral Music Trust, will be used towards the costs of the music department, which underpins the musical activity it offers to young people in north Cumbria and further afield.
The cathedral has boys’ and girls’ choirs, a consort choir and children’s community choir, as well as an outreach programme for schools that provides workshops and concerts each term.
The trust awarded almost £450,000 across the country.
The Rev’d Canon Benjamin Carter, canon warden at Carlisle Cathedral, said “We are absolutely delighted to secure this grant, one of the largest given out by Cathedral Music Trust in this year’s round of awards.
“Music is central to everything we do here at Carlisle Cathedral and is at the heart of worship – it is what people come for. It is free to visit the Cathedral and listen during the services, and we don’t charge to be part of the choirs, which shows just how vital this funding is. Thank you to the Cathedral Music Trust for their fantastic support.”
