Plans have been revealed for projects to replace the idea of bringing a new swimming pool in Maryport.
Cumberland Council was forced to shelve the idea of creating a new pool at the Wave Centre – initially part of its Future High Streets Fund bid to the Government- as its projected operational costs spiralled.
It said it would cost up to £500,000 a year to run and would not lay that burden on the taxpayer and it was simply unaffordable.
But the move caused controversy in the town and even Workington MP Mark Jenkinson waded in to demand a pool for the town after the decision was made.
But the authority said it would instead draw up ideas to replace the pool project – to make sure the funding stays in the town – and is going to host two drop-in events for people to have a look at them.
Ideas include:
- Reconfiguring The Wave to add a new adventure play area, improve Clip ‘n Climb, create a bigger gym and, depending on the option chosen, studio space and multi-purpose rooms
- Enhancing the area around the harbourside to create a new outdoor park and event venue, market square and adventure play area, complete with food, drink and retail units, and a splash park or skate park
- Improving the Promenade by building a new beachside shop, café and potential outside event space
Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, said: “I know the strength of feeling about this investment in Maryport and I hope we are creating some great new ideas that the whole community can get behind.
“Please come to these public events and tell us which ideas you think will really enhance the town. This is an exciting new opportunity to create facilities which will make a difference.”
The public drop-in events will take place at Maryport Town Hall on Senhouse Street on:
- Tuesday June 27 – 10am to 7pm
- Wednesday June 28 – 10am to 4pm
More information on the proposals and a link to an online consultation form will be available at the same time at www.cumberland.gov.uk/maryport or paper questionnaires can be collected from Maryport Town Hall next week.
