Cumbria’s development team went down by 87 runs in their game against the Wales National Counties North at St Asaph in Denbighshire.
It would have been a heavier defeat bit for an outstanding knock by Cumbrian skipper Nathan Waterston when his team was asked to chase the home total of 278-5.
The Furness batsman made 86, opening the innings and holding it together until he was ninth out in the 42nd over.
He batted for 14 minutes shy of three hours, faced 122 deliveries and struck 13 fours and a six.
Next best score for Cumbria came from their other senior team member Freddie Fallows who hit a quick fire 20 off only 15 balls.
Cumbria were bowled-out for 191 in 45.1 overs with the bet partnership worth 49 for the seventh wicket between Waterston and Cockermouth’s Josh Brown (11).
Matthew Jones was the most successful Welsh bowler taking 3-19.
Wales NC had opted to bat first and although Cumbria had an early success when Kendal’s Louis Backhouse got rid of opener Harrison Jones with a sharp caught and bowled for nine, it was mainly hard going.
They weren’t helped by the fact that fellow opening bowler Regan Jackson of Workington was struck on the hip while fielding and was only able to bowl two overs. He was limping when batting at number eleven late in the game.
The rest of the top order piled on the runs for the hosts. Nathaniel Scott was 92 not out; opener Matthew Ryan made 78 and at four William Ryan hit 59.
The second wicket stand was worth 127 while the partnership for the third wicket yielded another 90 runs.
Backhouse was the most successful Cumbrian bowler as he finished with 3-48.
