Police are asking anyone with information about a video circulating on social media showing a man throwing a cat into a lake at the bottom of a quarry to come forward.
The force said: “The incident is believed to have occurred in the Carnforth area and as such, enquiries are being conducted by our colleagues from Lancashire Constabulary into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“A man has been named in connection with the video and this line of enquiry will be explored.
“Although the footage is distressing and emotive in its nature, Cumbria police are reminding members of the public that speculation online can hinder an active investigation.
“Also please be aware that the man may share his name with other people who have online accounts, not connected with the incident, and that abusive, insulting or threatening messages to these accounts may well cause unwanted and unnecessary distress to innocent parties.
“Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated.”
People with information relating to the incident are directed to contact Lancashire Police via 101, referencing log LC-20230710-1785
