A hypothermic man was rescued after changing his mind on climbing Scafell Pike with friends.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were called out to Sty Head to the man on Saturday at around 6.19pm in wet and windy conditions.

He had become cold, wet and mildly hypothermic and was sheltering in the Sty Head Rescue Box.

The man had initially set off with two of his friends to climb the mountain – but turned back above the area of Stockley Bridge.

Returning to the group’s car, he then decided go back and follow on behind his friends.

His companions in the meantime continued to the summit, but on returning to their car in the valley, they discovered their friend was not there.

The rescue was passed on from Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team to Keswick, who sent two vehicles of team members to Seathwaite, from where they continued on foot towards Sty Head Pass.

The man was found just below the rescue box as he had started to descend on his own.

He had very sore knees and was given warm clothes and some pain relief and helped to walk down.

Not long into the descent it became necessary to put him on a stretcher to be carried back to Seathwaite where he was reunited with his friends who were sheltering in a rescue vehicle.

On the team’s descent they also came across another party descending very slowly as one of the party was suffering with a bad knee. Some pain relief was given.

The rescue involved 19 team members and took three hours and 41 minutes.
