A north Cumbrian A road will be closed for around a month for improvement work.

Work on the A6071 from Brampton to Smithfield is due to start on Monday, July 24, and is set to be completed by Tuesday, August 22.

The road will be closed from about 8am to 8pm each day.

During the work, the following roads will be closed each day:

  • From Monday July 24 to Monday August 7: the road between the A6071 Brampton to Newtown will be closed.
  • From Monday August 7 to Tuesday August 22: the road on the A6071 between Newtown to Smithfield will be closed each day.

A signed diversion route will be in place.

There will also be traffic signals in place at Newtown from Monday July 24 for seven days and at Smithfield from Monday July 31 for seven days.

The work is at four locations and Cumberland Council expect each scheme to take around seven days to complete. The locations are:

  • Brampton to Irthing Bridge
  • Newtown
  • Howrigg Farm to Highberries Bridge
  • Smithfield

If residents or businesses require access to their property, they are asked to discuss it with the traffic marshal on site during the work.

Access will be maintained for emergency services, the council said.
