Workington Reds continued their pre-season build-up again in the North East when they beat Ashington 3-0.
It was another positive performance from Danny Grainger’s men as he gave outings to 20 players in total.
But the biggest contribution came from Lewis Reilly who scored all three goals and continued his fine start to the new season.
“He’s come back fitter and is looking really good. I have a lot of faith in him and I think we can see the best of him in the months ahead.
“But there were other areas where I was really pleased with how we played and that’s what I’ve been looking for.
“There’s competition for places and I know the 20 on duty today were fighting to be in the 16 for the opening game against Ashton in a fortnight – whether it be in the starting line-up or on the bench,” said the manager.
Reds had taken the lead on 35 minutes when Dav Symington laid the ball to Reilly, 25 yards out and he swivelled before firing a fine low shot beyond the Ashington keeper.
On 43 minutes he doubled the Workington lead. An Ashington defender played a loose back pass which was short and Reilly nipped in. Although forced wide he managed to steer the ball home from an acute angle.
His hat-trick goal came on 57 minutes and was probably the best of the lot. Conor Tinnion won back possession and fed Reilly. He was immediately closed down on his right foot, but switched it quickly to his left before firing home.
Ashington were kept at arm’s length for the rest of the game and with changes being made Reds reached the finish line very comfortably.
They complete their pre-season programme next Saturday, again in the North East, at Dunston.
