With Workington Reds’ new season kicking off at Borough Park this Saturday the newly-promoted club have revealed some major changes in their match-day catering.
Part of this new initiative is to showcase much more local food producers throughout the forthcoming Northern Premier League season.
One popular change already implemented, has been the introduction of traditional Cumberland sausage to replace the previous standard basic banger.
But this week for their first home league game against Ashton United the club is introducing a Guest Pie of the Day.
Reds’ director Les Byers explained: “As well as our legendary steak pies and ever popular meat and potato pies, both already produced locally, supporters will now have the opportunity to try a different guest pie at each of the next 21 homes fixtures. All of which will be sourced from the best pie makers across Cumbria.”
The first guest pie for Saturday’s Ashton game has been revealed as a chicken Balti pie from Carlisle’s Pie Demand.
Les said: “I discovered Pie Demand when I was catching a train out of Carlisle Station. They have a stall, with their bakery underneath the arches in nearby Water Street.”
Laura, of the husband-and-wife team that created Pie Demand in 2019, said: “We are very proud to support Workington Reds and honoured to produce the inaugural Guest Pie of the Day at Borough Park. We love this new initiative and hopefully the club will return to us and perhaps select another pie from our range.”
The hunt is now on to locate further special guest pies for the remaining Workington Reds home games. The only proviso for selection is all pies must be locally made in the county.
Les added: “If you are that special pie maker, or you wish to highlight your favourite pie or pie shop, you are invited to contact the club with your recommendations.”
