Christopher Thompson, 37, of Beeby Street, Workington, faced five charges when he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court earlier today.
One charges alleges controlling or coercive behaviour which is alleged to have had a serious effect on the woman, between June 27 and July 9 this year.
Thompson is alleged during those dates to have withheld wine, causing her to suffer alcohol withdrawal; confiscated her phone; and prevented her from leaving her address when she wanted.
One other charge alleges false imprisonment between July 6 and July 9; another alleges assault occasioning actual bodily harm; a further charge alleges assault by beating; and a fifth charge alleges damaging property.
During a short hearing in front of a judge, Thompson pleaded not guilty to all five allegations.

In the meantime Thompson has been remanded in custody after an application for bail was refused.
