Winners from the 2022 Cumbria County Tennis Championship

This year’s Cumbria County Tennis Championships will be sponsored by Lloyd Motor Group, it has been announced.

The championships begin this Saturday, August 19, at Barrow’s Hawcoat Park with the Over-35s and Over 60s men’s and ladies doubles.

The Under-8 boys and girls singles events will take place at Kirkby Lonsdale on Saturday August 26. All other events will run from August 20 to August 27 at Chatsworth Tennis Club, St Aidan’s Road, Carlisle.

Since beginning in 1977, the tournament has been a core occasion in the local tennis calendar for the county. On finals day, Sunday August 27, Chatsworth Tennis Club will be hosting a barbecue from noon and trophies will be presented during the afternoon.

Joy Robinson, LTA council member, said: “These championships are our flagship event and players come together to compete from all areas in Cumbria. For those not competing, it is a super opportunity to come along and watch some great tennis.”

Craig Kirkpatrick, head of marketing at Lloyd Motor Group, added: “We are thrilled to support the Cumbria County Championships again this year. It is a privilege to support the county-wide event and see the dedication and enthusiasm all participants bring to the sport and the tournament.”

Mixed doubles winners in 2022

This year’s tournament hopes to see the return of Logan Cowan, who last year won 18U boys’ singles, men’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles, as well as Isla Charnock who last year won 14U and 16U girls’ singles and 14U and 18U mixed doubles.

The Cumbria County Tennis Championships have been a platform for emerging tennis talents, with past winners going on to play at Wimbledon.

Freddy Blaydes, who became men’s county champion in 2021, made his debut at Wimbledon this year, winning matches in the boys’ singles draw and boys’ doubles draw.
