A popular member of Workington Comets’ 2018 treble-winning team is recovering in hospital after a horror crash in Poland yesterday.
Current King’s Lynn captain Nicolai Klindt was brought down in a three-man pile-up during the Ostrow v Gdansk fixture on Sunday.
He has suffered a broken neck in two places, with a C3 fracture, although there are reported to be no complications and he does have movement in his arms and legs.
The incident also involved Oliver Berntzon and Francis Gusts who appear to have escaped with heavy bruising.
Klindt rode 36 matches in 2018 for the Comets and finished with an average of 7.78.
Tony Jackson, Comets team manager at the time, said: “Naturally I was shocked to hear of his big crash in Poland, where by all accounts he was the innocent party.
“Thankfully initial reports say he has full movement which is a big positive but obviously it will take time to fully recover and I know that everyone connected with the 2018 Comets will wish him a speedy recovery.
“He is a really nice guy and was an integral member of our treble winning team both on and off the track. He has been riding really well in all Leagues this year and I am gutted for him.”
It appears that one of the riders in that particular heat in Poland hit the fence after the fourth turn, pounced off and took two riders clean out – bikes and all. Klindt flew through the air and landed on his back/neck.
The other two were in among the bikes but appeared to have escaped with minor bruising.
