Carlisle City get back to winning ways

After their controversial home draw with Whickham, Carlisle City got back to winnings ways at Northallerton.

All the goals came in the first half as they won 3-1 to move into sixth place in the Northern League’s First Division.

Manager Jim Nichols said: “I think there’s been a feeling that our performances haven’t really got the results they deserved. In fact if we’d got the win over Whickham instead of the controversial draw we would have been joint top.

“So it was pleasing to get the win at Northallerton against a side who had only lost once before Saturday.

“We had to come from behind to win it, too, conceding after only a couple of minutes but we came back to lead 3-1 by half-time.

“I thought we were comfortably in control in the second-half and can now look forward to a break this week before the FA Vase tie with Garstang on Saturday.

“We have given the lads a break from training on Tuesday and we will be back in Thursday because it’s been a hectic start to the season.”

Jamie Davis had put Northallerton ahead after only five minutes but Josh Simpson equalised two minutes later when he cashed in on a poor clearance by the home keeper.

When City got in behind the home defence a minute later he was able to round the keeper and slot home the second.

City, who hit the woodwork twice and had a Rob McCartney goal ruled out for offside, got their third goal on 32 minutes when a Tom Mahone corner went straight in over the inexperienced keeper.
