Lake District area’s parking problems under spotlight

Bad parking and safety issues in a popular area of the Lake District have prompted council bosses to put them under the spotlight.

Issues in the Portinscale, Borrowdale and Stonethwaite areas and Keswick town centre highlighted by people in informal feedback have led Cumberland Council to launch a consultation.

It also includes proposals for the road along the western shore of Thirlmere.

The consultation period is from today, Friday August 25, to Friday September 15.

The Thirlmere road had emergency restrictions imposed after Storm Arwen in November 2021 due to fallen trees, rockfalls, and debris.

This affected the next-door land, Rough Crag, which belongs to United Utilities.

Evaluations by United Utilities assessed damage across Rough Crag, including hidden sections, such as tree damage and loose rock hazards. Ongoing discussions are taking place with United Utilities to determine if technical solutions can make the road safe again.

While these discussions continue, the hazards persist, necessitating the continuation of a full road closure at Rough Crag, Cumberland Council said.

Additionally, a restriction for motor vehicles is proposed on two segments of the road, allowing access for pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders, while providing safe turning points for vehicles.

Proposals also include loading restrictions linked with the Premier Inn development at High Hill, Keswick.

It also includes structural weight restrictions at the following bridges:

  • Chapel Bridge, Little Town
  • Hazel Bank Bridge, Rosthwaite
  • Mariel Bridge, Mosedale
  • Sosgill Bridge, St John’s-in-the-Vale

Comments can be emailed to trafficteam.west@cumberland.gov.uk, or sent to Keswick TRO Review, Highways Depot, Joseph Noble Road Lillyhall, Workington Cumbria CA14 4JH.
