Blackpool academy coach Lee Camp has been added to the list of candidates said to be interested in the vacant manager’s job at Darlington.
But the Quakers will go into FA Cup action against Workington tonight under the caretaker management of three senior players.
The Darlington board have said they hope to be interviewing their short list of applicants over the next few days and make an announcement before next Saturday’s National North game.
On the pitch Darlington have only won once this season in nine matches – at Alfreton on August 26 – but the three-man caretaker team have been impressed with the players attitude in training this week.
The trio took charge for the first time in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bishop’s Stortford but manager Alun Armstrong had only been sacked on the Tuesday night after a home draw with Boston saw them slip to bottom of the table.
The club has had over 30 applications for the job with Camp the latest to be publicly named as interested.
The 39-year-old former goalkeeper hung up his boots last year after having a 20-year career across the football pyramid, including the Premier League.
He played for the likes of West Brom, Norwich, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest before ending his career at Wrexham.
Camp is currently working at the Blackpool academy but is keen to cut his teeth as a manager.
He has been coaching youngsters but is keen to get a start as a manager and sources say he sees Darlington as an ideal platform.
Camp is hopeful that the contacts he has built over a 20-year playing career will help him land that job.
Steve Watson (ex-Newcastle) and Robbie Stockdale (ex-Sunderland) have also been linked with the vacancy.
Caretaker boss Will Hatfield, who has been in charge alongside team-mates Tom Platt and Jake Lawlor, has been encouraged by the attitude of the club’s players ahead of the Reds visit.
Lawlor is actually available after suspension foe tonight’s game and as all three will probably be playing goalkeeping coach Jim Provett and physio Danny O’Connor will be looking after the technical area
Quakers go into the game looking for their first home win of the season and won’t be able to use on-loan Finlay Barnes as York won’t allow him to play.
Reds will go into the contest without Lewis Reilly (ankle) and Bobby Carroll (knee) but otherwise manager Danny Grainger will have more choice than he did last week ahead of the 5-3 win against Basford United.
