A major fire in a West Cumbrian village has now been extinguished – and people can return to their homes.
Emergency services were called to Distington, between Workington and Whitehaven, at around 11.30pm last night, September 15, after people spotted the blaze at an industrial yard off Main Street.
A large scale incident response was launched as people were evacuated from their homes and roads through the village were closed as firefighters tackled the blaze, believed to be in the Tyson Burridge yard.
The latest update from police this morning said people can now safely return to their homes.
There may be some odour remaining following the fire and people living nearby are asked to keep their windows and doors closed until this has dispersed.
There were no reported casualties and road closures of the A595 and B5306 have been lifted.
Ian Seel, area manager at Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We will continue to monitor the site over the next 24 hours but we can confirm the fire is now out.
“This incident caused a large level of disruption to those living nearby overnight. A swift multi-agency response was coordinated to keep people safe and tackle the fire.
“We’d like to thank the public who were impacted by this for their patience throughout.”
Some residents went to Distington Community Centre on Church Road while others went to friends or relatives.
Buses that usually run through the village are using the Loop Road bus stops, villagers are reporting on social media.
