In some rare midweek action in the Cumberland County League on Wednesday night a Benevolent Cup-tie took centre stage.
Division One outfit Dearham United travelled to St Benedict’s High School to face Premier Division side Workington AFC Reserves in the first round of the competition.
Reds were the ones who booked a second round tie against Mirehouse after winning this meeting 9-1. Goals came from Jack Dunstan (4), Cain Pears (3), Tyler Harrell and Chad Grisdale with Jack Brown on the score-sheet for Dearham.
In the Premier Division on Saturday, Aspatria have the weekend off so this gives second place Cleator Moor Reserves and third place Unisun Athletic the opportunity to go top.
Cleator Moor travel to Maryport Athletic, a team who have only managed one point in their first three games and will be hoping to upset their visitors with three points themselves.
Meanwhile, Unisun are back on home soil when they entertain fourth placed Gosforth. With Unisun still unbeaten and in good form, Gosforth have picked up four points out of a possible nine and will be hopeful for a second win on the bounce after being victorious last weekend.
Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Carlisle City Development are playing their second game in the league after being involved in cup action on previous Saturdays and they are on the road to Wigton Harriers.
The Harriers are a side who have struggled so far after picking up only a point in their opening three games and will be aiming to kick start their season with that elusive first win on Saturday.
In Division One, encouraged by their point last week-end, Silloth will be aiming for the same or even more when they face Mirehouse away. Mirehouse are only two points and a place above their opponents so this could be an interesting contest.
Top of the table Cockermouth saw their 100 per cent record come to an end last Saturday, However they are still unbeaten and striker Luke Graham will be aiming to be on the scoresheet once again after he has netted 11 goals in the first four games of the season.
They host Whitehaven AFC Reserves who are coming into this game in second place on goal difference and three points behind Cockermouth.
Dearham United take on Windscale Reserves in the third Division One fixture scheduled for Saturday. Both teams sit in 5th and 6th place respectively with both clubs having similar records with four points after three games so this could be a close game.
Keswick, who are settling into Cumberland County League life nicely host Bransty Rangers in Benevolent Cup round two action.
