A Carlisle street closed due to safety concerns has now reopened.
Cumberland Council barriered off pavements along Devonshire Street on Wednesday after a survey to assess the condition of cellars, vaults, and arches within buildings beneath the light wells on the footway.
Access to six businesses was restricted as a result.
But the authority said today: “After conducting additional evaluations and reinforcing the basements of some properties along Devonshire Street, we are pleased to announce that we can now reopen the pathways for pedestrian access.”
Barriers will remain over the light wells in front of John Taylor, Thin White Duke, Nationwide, Pizza Express and Scott Duff and Co. The council has requested that people do not remove them.
