I was talking on the phone to Penrith manager Darren Edmondson last week when he paused and apologised saying he was just watching the golf – before resuming the conversation.
“I’m not a golf fan but I like the Ryder Cup,” he said, and when I came off the phone I couldn’t help but think that was my take on it as well.
It’s always better when we win of course but I enjoyed the contest this time as it reached a conclusion on Sunday.
Watching these top professionals you realise how good they are and the skills that are involved in playing the game.
I haven’t had a lot of 18-hole experience – and have probably played the nine-hole pitch and putt at Keswick more than anywhere else.
But over the years I have had a thrash or two round Workington, Cockermouth and Maryport – and a municipal course at Liverpool.
In truth it was a hack and a thrash for the most part and I only really came into my own on the putting green. Holidays spent at Morecambe, Blackpool and Great Yarmouth had honed a certain type of skill.
I did manage a couple of holes in two – at Liverpool and Workington (both after hitting the green in one) and then being able to finish off with successful putts.
They are really the only shots that stand out from a far from illustrious attempt to tackle the game.
I can also recall the worst shot I ever played on a golf course – also at Workington and in the company of some good pals who were helpless with laughter in the end.
I had left my bag (probably not following etiquette) about 20 yards from the tee, and to the right – but in front of me.
My drive never gained any height, swerved alarmingly to the right and was deposited in my golf bag! A hole in one it certainly wasn’t.
Get me on the green and I’m fine but getting there is the hard bit.
