Whitehaven have announced the return of Welsh international Will Evans to the LEL Arena for the 2024 season.
Australian Evans has signed a two-year deal with Haven after he left last year to join Widnes, but in fact had his contract cancelled after just one pre-season game to return home.
Evans, 22, returns to West Cumbria after having made 26 appearances all in the starting 13 back in 2022 scoring eight tries in Haven colours. He scored on his debut away to Leigh Centurions in the opening round of the 2022 Championship season.
The centre scored four tries in the last six games of the 2022 season and was named in the Welsh Rugby League World Cup Squad after making his senior bow for the international side in the mid-season test against France.
He captained Queensland’s under-16s and he came through the development systems at the Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans, as well as playing a good standard at Burleigh.
Speaking about returning to the club from his Australian home Evans said: “I can’t wait to get over and get started and join back up with Jonty and the boys. I’m a little bit nervous to come over again.
“I really enjoyed my time last time at Whitehaven. It’s no lie I headed back home after leaving Widnes but after playing local footy I got the love and desire for the game back and I’m pretty excited.”
Will Evans is the sixth confirmed member of the 2024 Whitehaven squad with more announcements to come shortly as the club continue to build the squad for the Championship campaign next season.
A spokesman said: “The club once again would like to thank all involved with the Whitehaven RL Vice Presidents as their fundraising throughout the year helps the club with signings like Will contributing towards the costs of bringing him to the UK.”
