A superb performance in front of over 4,400 of their travelling fans could be just the result to kick-start Carlisle United’s season in League One.
They came from behind at Bolton to win 3-1 with a fine hat-trick from in-form Jordan Gibson.
Manager Paul Simpson said: “I thought we were magnificent in all aspects of the game against a very good Bolton side. It really was a tremendous team performance and I was so pleased that so many of our fans were there to see it.”
Bolton had taken the lead on 28 minutes when a cross from Josh Dacres-Cogley caused problems in the Carlisle defence and Jon Mellish turned the ball into his own net.
Carlisle could have been level seven minutes later when their former player Kyle Dempsey was ruled to have fouled Sean Maguire and referee Seb Stockbridge awarded a penalty.
Joe Garner stepped-up but his spot-kick was saved by Nathan Baxter.
However just before half-time Carlisle were awarded a second penalty when the referee adjudged Eoin Toal to have handled in the box. This time Gibson took over responsibility and he found the bottom corner.
Maguire was denied by Baxter in the second half before Gibson popped up again to fire Calisle ahead 20 minutes from the end.
It stayed that way until the fifth minute of time added on when Baxter joined the attack for a corner as Bolton threw the kitchen sink at United. When the flag-kick was cleared Baxter was stranded and Gibson broke.
He had to keep his cool under the situation as the defenders tried desperately to get back but held his nerve and completed a famous win – and his hat-trick.
