Carlisle Cougars went top of the table after beating Horden and Peterlee Valkyries 34-25 in an absorbing contest.
It was their first ever game against the Valkyries and from watching pre-season friendlies the Cougars knew it was going to be a hard match and very heavily forward orientated.
It was a close game, however, and the Carlisle players were grateful for all the spectators that came down and supported, helping them over the finish line.
The Valkyries exerted early pressure and soon had points on the board with an unconverted try.
They also took advantage of the Cougars not switching on quickly enough, as they also put over a penalty kick.
After these setbacks the Cougars picked up their game and moved the ball smartly to the backs for a break in defence.
A quick ball from a ruck for Kim Fitzmaurice provided her with the first try and there was plenty of space around the defensive line which meant Vanessa Hagen was able to go over for a second try.

Overall though going into the second half with a slender 10-8 lead was too close for comfort for the Cougars.
The Carlisle players were given stern word by their coach during half time about stepping up their game and it provided early reward when full back Bethan Lloyd scored a few minutes into the second half.
However, after a high tackle Lloyd was given a yellow card leaving the Cougars with just 14 players.
The Valkyries took advantage of this by scoring two tries, one of which was converted.

Now trailing in the game Carlisle needed a response when they were back to a full compliment and both Hagen and Cunningham went over for tries, one of which was converted by Sarah Smyth.
A fine team try rounded-off the scoring for the Cougars. Some great, quick off-loads from the forwards provided the chance which was finished by Smyth who also converted it.
The Valkyries were not finished, however, and they pushed Carlisle back for a decent spell. Although the Cougars defence stood the test well they finally conceded but the try wasn’t enough to change the course of the game for the visitors.

It was an eye-opening game for both teams who will have taken a lot away to learn from. But certainly the Cougars were happy to have won the bonus point and be top of the table after the first two games.

The Cougars’ next game is on October 29 away to Novos.
