Tough tests for rugby union sides this weekend

Penrith got off the mark two weeks ago with their first win in Regional 1 North West.

They beat their fellow strugglers Sandbach in a tight game at Winters Park but the Cumbrians have a tough one to follow up with.

They travel to Rossendale, who are third in the table with four wins from their five league games so far.

That vital first win of the season lifted Kendal off the foot of the table, two points better off than Sandbach.

Like Penrith, though, Sandbach have a very tough game on their hands as they entertain second in the table Macclesfield who have won all five games so far.

Kendal, who lie fifth, have had a decent start to the campaign with three wins from their five games to lie fifth in the table.

They break new ground with a trip to Leek for the first time and the Staffordshire side have had a couple of victories so far to lie eighth of 12.

In Regional 2 North Aspatria will be playing a third successive Cumbrian derby  – and like their toughest test as they travel to Upper Eden.

They had a narrow one-point win over Cockermouth and then a hard-fought success against Keswick and have climbed to sixth in the table.

Upper Eden, who had a superb start by winning their first two games, have lost the last three and currently lie eighth two points behind the Bower Park side.

Keswick and Cockermouth have been showing signs of getting to grips with this League but still occupy the bottom two positions.

Cockermouth travel to Stockton who are ninth, having won two of their five games with the Cumbrians bottom on just the one single point they earned against Aspatria.

Keswick will be looking for their second win of the season when they entertain Northern, who are expected to offer a strong challenge. They are fifth having won three of their five games to date.

Top match, in many ways, in Counties 1 Cumbria will be the derby match between Carlisle and Creighton, which must be the first time the clubs have met in a League fixture.

Carlisle have started well, but had their toughest match at Egremont two weeks ago while Creighton were enjoying their second win of the campaign at Windermere.

Another interesting confrontation sees Wigton and Penrith 2nds quickly go back into opposition a fortnight after the Greens went down 35-31 under the Winters Park lights.

Other games are: Aspatria 2nds v Workington; Egremont v St Benedict’s; Whitehaven v Keswick 2nds; Windermere v Millom.
