Heavy rain and 70mph winds due for Cumbria as Storm Babet continues

Warnings for heavy rain and winds of up to 70mph have been issued for Cumbria as Storm Babet continues.

The Met Office has predicted gusts of wind up to 70mph for the county from noon today, Friday, and into the evening, easing South throughout Saturday.

Heavy rain has also been predicted for eastern parts of the county, including Carlisle, Penrith and the wider Eden area. It is expected to last until tomorrow evening.

Large waves and dangerous coastal conditions are also expected due to the high winds today and the forecaster said the winds could exacerbate the impact of the of rain due.

The warnings come as Storm Babet continues to hit the UK, causing widespread flooding and serious disruption in some parts of Scotland.

What to expect in Cumbria

  • It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life
  • Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads
  • Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
