Burton in Kendal Services is currently closed to the public and is likely to remain closed for some time following an incident in the early hours of today.

Police were contacted at around 2.15am to a report that a number of people, wearing balaclavas had arrived at the service station and attempted to steal an internal ATM at the services.

Having failed in this, they broke into a store and stole a cash register from the services, which is on the M6 northbound between Junction 35 and 36.

They have then driven from the scene.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

As police continue with their investigations at the scene, the services is likely to remain closed for some time.

However, the petrol station and car park areas have now be reopened to the public.

Anyone who witnessed what occurred or has any information which may assist is urged to contact police.

You can report online at www.cumbria.police.uk/reportit , quoting incident number 20 of 21 October 2023 or call 101.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
