A Penrith man has appeared in court accused of assaulting and emotionally abusing his ex-girlfriend.

Luke Gray, aged 21 and of Norfolk Place, faces three separate charges.

One alleges controlling or coercive behaviour and that, during a six-week period earlier this year, between March 14 and April 25, he assaulted and demonstrated emotional abuse towards the woman.

Two other charges allege that Gray assaulted the woman, by beating, on both April 16 and April 22.

As Gray appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court earlier today, a prosecutor alleged that criminal conduct occurred following the end of a three-year relationship.

During the hearing, Gray said he was entering “no plea” at this stage to the controlling or coercive conduct allegation. He was not asked to indicate any pleas in respect of the two assault charges.

A district judge, Timothy Gascoyne, concluded that the case could continue to be dealt with in the magistrates’ court.

Gray, as is his legal right, elected for the case to instead be heard in future at Carlisle Crown Court. He is due to appear there in front of a judge on November 20, when pleas are due to be entered in respect of all allegations.

In the meantime, Gray has been granted bail.
