
The search for a man who fell from a north Cumbrian bridge has entered its third day.
Police were called at around 8.05pm on Sunday October 22, to Wetheral railway bridge after people spotted a man on the bridge on the wrong side of the railings.
A Cumbria Constabulary spokesman said: “Officers attended and the man – in his 40s and from the Carlisle area – was found on the bridge, on the wrong side of the railings.
“Despite the efforts of emergency services at the scene, the man has fallen from the bridge, shortly after 9pm.”
In a statement released at just after 1.40am on Sunday police said efforts were ongoing to find the man, who had not been seen since entering the water,
The incident was also attended by other emergency services including Cumbria Fire and Rescue and Penrith Mountain Rescue Team. A police helicopter also attended to help with the search.
The search on Sunday was stood down in the early hours and restarted again on Monday. An extensive multi-agency search is being carried out and water levels are being monitored to aid the search.
The spokesman added: “In accordance with IOPC guidelines, Cumbria Constabulary has informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
