Windscale began their Wearside League game with their backs to the wall against a lively Shotton side.
But by the end of the contest Windscale were in charge and deservedly won 4-1.
Shotton’s early emphasis was on attack and this policy un-nerved the hosts who spent the first 15 minutes of the match chasing shadows.
The Atoms were their own worst enemies with poor ball retention and some wayward passing allowing Shotton to have an early dominance.
Shotton took the lead in the 13th minute. A long ball was flicked on by Peter Crawford to Dan Maddison who clipped the ball beyond keeper Lee Jolly.
This was the wake-up call Windscale needed and levelled the scores in the 30th minute. A shot by Will Rooke cannoned off the post and was picked up by Reece Fretwell who, after rounding a defender, slid the ball into the back of the Shotton goal.
Windscale took the lead in the 44th minute. Lewis Jolly floated in a corner which was initially headed clear. Steven Walker picked up the loose ball to feed Matty Pierce, his shot ricocheting to Matt Metcalf who buried the ball beyond Shotton keeper Mason Beckett to take a 2-1 lead at the interval.
The Atoms increased their lead just after the hour mark. Lewis Jolly whipped in yet another corner, Metcalf rising the highest to notch his second of the game and providing a 3-1 advantage to the hosts.
It was all Windscale now, the woodwork coming to Shotton’s rescue on a number of occasions.
The fourth and final goal came from the penalty spot after Rooke was brought down as he advanced on goal. The front man picked himself up to give Becket no chance with the resulting kick.
It was a well-earned result for Windscale following their indifferent start to the game, Shotton working hard but unable to counter the Atoms second half onslaught.
Windscale are on the road on Saturday when they visit Annfield Plain.
