Concern over Stagecoach bus changes in Barrow

Concerns have been raised over planned changes for Stagecoach bus changes, due to come into force on Monday.

The travel firm released its winter timetable this week, and there are changes to the 6 and X6 services in the south of the county.

It has increased buses on the 6 between Barrow and Windermere with some journeys extending to Kendal and on Sundays, the 6 combines with the X6 via Grange to provide an hourly service between Barrow and Kendal.

The X6 no longer calls at Furness General Hospital, although the 6 does instead.

On Sundays, the 6 and X6 operate via Croftlands Estate between Lindal and Ulverston while the X6 no longer serves High Newton evenings and Sundays.

But Simon Fell, Barrow and Furness MP, has written to Stagecoach after constituents approached him with their concerns.

He said many have told him they will now need to walk much further to reach the nearest bus stop.

In his letter, Mr Fell said: “Passengers who are elderly or have low mobility will also struggle to adapt to the new changes due to the need to walk further to reach the nearest bus stop now located at Victoria Road.”

The buses will no longer stop at County Square, outside Coronation Hall, and bypass Swarthmoor as a whole on a Sunday.

Stuart Ward, of the Miners Arm, said he feared the change will have a detrimental effect on his business.

He said: “One of my busiest days is a Sunday when lots of people use the buses to come to the pub for Sunday lunch. Some of my regular customers rely on the buses to get them out and about to live music events and this will mean that many stay indoors this winter. There doesn’t seem to have been any consultation with the public in making this decision.”

Mr Fell said: “This is just not good enough from Stagecoach, and people are really concerned about how these changes will affect them getting around this winter.

“I understand that there has been increase in some services, but this doesn’t mean you should isolate a whole village to improve service elsewhere.

“I have written to Stagecoach to highlight these issues and hope that they will look into the concerns local residents have.”

Tom Waterhouse, interim managing director of Stagecoach Cumbria and North Lancashire, said: “From November 6, we are making some changes to our 6 and X6 services between Barrow and Kendal on a Sunday.

“These changes will allow us to double the frequency of the service between Barrow and Kendal via Ulverston which will now operate hourly. This improved connectivity along the Furness Peninsula means even more people will be able to take advantage of the £2 maximum single fare with more journeys than before.

“We will also continue to offer an hourly service to Croftlands Estate on Sundays, although in order for us avoid services operating a lengthy out and back loop and therefore to keep journey times attractive for through passengers, we will no longer be operate along a short stretch of the A590 between Swarthmoor roundabout and Victoria Road on Sundays only.

“Monday to Saturday service continue to operate as current albeit with some minor changes to times to improve reliability and more journeys to Windermere.

“Separately, to improve the reliability of services around Ulverston, we have taken the difficult decision to withdraw services from County Square.

“Buses will now instead stop a very short distance away on Victoria Road. This is primarily due to us encountering delays to services because of parked cars and delivery vehicles which frequently delay services passing through the square, plus a long wait for traffic light cycles.”
