Volunteers are needed to join one of the longest-running research projects in the world.
A six-week historical skills course will train volunteers to help the Victoria County History project with researching the Big Red Books of Cumbria.
The Victoria County of History of Cumbria project aims to publish 16 of these books, containing a detailed history of every parish and township in Cumbria.
The books will bring together historic documents, cared for by Cumbria Archive Service, and make them accessible to people all over the world.
This is a massive task, so they need help collecting the information that will be included.
Morecambe Bay Partnership has teamed up with the Victoria County History of Cumbria project to host a historical research training course which will give volunteers all the skills they need to get involved. No experience is necessary to join in.
Each week will cover a different research theme and will be led by experts in history, archaeology, and archives. It will introduce the most useful sources of information and give guidance on where to find them and include practical activities for volunteers to try out new skills.
Training sessions will be on Monday afternoons from November 6 to December 11 – four sessions will be online, and there will be a visit to Barrow Archives and an outdoor building history tour of Dalton-in-Furness.
