A temporary ban – allowing police to ask people to leave the area – was put in place in Carlisle city centre last night.
The dispersal order was enforced after several incidents of anti-social behaviour – including a group of youths throwing fireworks – were reported in the run-up to Carlisle Fireshow.
The dispersal order gives officers extra powers to ask people engaging in anti-social behaviour to leave the area and not return, if they return they risk being arrested.
The order was put in place at 5pm until 11pm and covered the Bitts Park area and was extended to cover the city centre – Scotch Street, Lowther Street, English Street, Botchergate and Castle Street.
A number of people were dispersed from the area and officers also arrested at 16-year-old on suspicion of attempted criminal damage. He remains in police custody.
Inspector Andy Leather, of Carlisle neighbourhood policing team, said: “Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.
“We had dedicated resources covering the fireworks show at Bitts Park and in the city centre to ensure everyone had a safe and enjoyable night.
“We are aware of a group who have thrown fireworks in the town centre, which is extremely dangerous. We will be looking to identify those involved.
“Those who have been issued dispersal orders will be getting a visit from officers at home.
“Officers continued to patrol the area throughout this evening.”
A further dispersal order has been put in place for today, Sunday, November 5. More details here.
