A sixth person has appeared in court after a man and woman were seriously injured on a residential Carlisle road as a car was allegedly used as a weapon.

Cumbria police confirmed late last month that officers had responded shortly after 6.10am on Tuesday October 24, after a report of fighting in the street in Gloucester Road, behind Blackwell Road, in Currock, which involved several people.

Police who attended the scene found a woman and a man, both in their 40s, with serious injuries.

“Both were subsequently taken from the scene to hospital with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening,” said a police spokesman.

As they were detained in hospital, officers investigating the incident made a series of arrests. Five people — four men and a woman — aged between 33 and 45 — were each charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, assault occasions actual bodily harm and affray.

All appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court and are next due to appear in front of a judge at the city’s crown court on November 24.

So, too, is a sixth person – 41-year-old Stuart Kendrick, of Ashness Drive in Carlisle.

Kendrick appeared in front of a district judge at the magistrates’ court earlier today having also been charged in connection with the incident.

He is also charged with causing both a man and woman grievous bodily harm with intent, the assault of a teenage girl and affray.

It is alleged by the prosecution that the man and woman were injured, suffering fractures, when a car was used as a weapon.

Kendrick entered no pleas to the charges he faces. He was remanded in custody by the district judge, John Temperley, and is also due to appear at the crown court on November 24.

Speaking after last month’s incident, Det Sergt Sarah Story had said: “It remains extremely important that anyone who saw what occurred and is yet to come forward does so immediately.

“We are particularly keen to hear from eye-witnesses and anyone who believes they may have footage which could assist this investigation.”
