Plans have been lodged for new glamping pods near Scafell Pike in a bid to meet growing national demand.
The Scafell Hotel has submitted a planning application to the Lake District National Park Authority to build three self-catering holiday cabins in Rosthwaite.
The applicant said the proposed development could help businesses in the local area generate more income.
A planning statement submitted on behalf of the hotel said the proposed site aims to provide a new and exciting accommodation option to the Rosthwaite, wider Cumbria and Lake District area.
It added: “Demand for this type of accommodation is high throughout the country, which has also been shown to be true of other glamping sites within England.
“This development will increase footfall for local businesses and through correct marketing, should increase the length of time tourists remain in the area. This will be beneficial to the local economy including tourist attractions, cafes. restaurants and other businesses.”
The planning statement also claims the proposed development will not have a negative impact on the character of the Lake District.
It added that the site has ample screening from existing trees along the western boundary and with the addition of hedgerows along all other boundaries, it is believed that the single-storey cabins will not be visible by passers-by on the public roads.
The cabins would also have a timber-clad appearance and the planting of native shrubbery around each unit aims to further integrate them in the surroundings.
Planning documents also state access to the site will be via an existing gated entrance just off the B5289 opposite the entrance to the hotel.
