Network Rail has also issued a statement on cancelled and delayed trains in the county due to flooding.
Phil James, Network Rail’s North West route director said: “We’re sorry to passengers in Cumbria delayed by the ongoing impact of Storm Debi on the railway.
“Continued heavy rain overnight has flooded sections of the West Coast main line, Cumbrian Coast line and Settle to Carlisle line.
“Trackside teams are working as fast as they can to clear the water away and repair any potential damage. Meanwhile our control room and signalling staff are working tirelessly to keep the network moving as much as possible.
“Disruption to the normal timetable is expected today while the clear up continues.
“Passengers are urged to check National Rail Enquires for the latest travel information before they set out on their journey.”
Cumbria Police have advised motorists to take extra care on the county’s roads today and allow extra time for journeys.
It added that vulnerable road users including cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians should be given more room than usual.
