
Flimby Social produced a solid 4-1 win in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League this week at Workington Veterans Club B to remain top of Division One on 17 points.
A brilliant start for the Social outfit saw a magnificent break of 70 from Kevin Kirkham put the top tier leaders 1-0 up and with Kirkham senior, Richard, delivering the goods in the second the Flimby side raced to a 2-0 advantage.
Jordan Ferguson, however, continued to show promise in his first season in the League with another victory to pull one back for the Vets Club B team at 2-1.
The loss of the previous frame proved to be nothing more than a slight set-back for the Flimby side as they piled on the pressure even more in the fourth with a Sal Cakmak win,
They followed up with a victory from Geoff Banton in the last as the Social Club captain rounded off the match nicely to finish at 4-1. The Vets B side stay third in Division Two on 8 points.
Division One’s Workington United Club A made short work of of their second tier opponents with a 4-1 home victory over Whitehaven’s Rack Shack to move into fourth on 13 points.
Top heavy in the match order United A went for an early lead and as team captain Andrew Mitchelhill and Peter O’Hagan won the first two relatively comfortably the home side did just that.
At 2-0 the United Club A were keen to kick on and in wasting no time they doubled their lead with Clive Lister and Dave Chapman taking the next two for 4-0.
A one-sided scoreline didn’t faze the Rack Shack’s Adam Morilla, however, and with an assured performance the Whitehaven cueist secured a whitewash avoiding point with a victory to end the match at 4-1. The Rack Shack remain bottom of Division Two on three points.
Workington Golf Club A put their Division One title defence back on track with a composed 4-1 home win against the United Club B to move into second place on 16 points.
Thumping wins for Mark Cowen and Phil Sorfleet got the Golf Club A off to a flier but with a frame winning break of 44 from Dale Milton the United B side were back in the match.
Hope remained for the Division Two side as frame four progressed with a victory on the last few colours but Simon Frazer made sure the Golf Club A claimed the match win at 3-1.
The last frame of the evening was always going to be difficult for the United Club B side as the Golf Club A’s ever reliable Bryan Walker produced another solid performance to deliver a 4-1 . winThe United Club B drop down one place into a Division Two second spot on 13 points.
Workington Conservative Club moved up a Division One place into third on the back of a 4-1 home win against Division Two’s Workington Golf Club B.
A Richard McCarthy victory put the Cons outfit 1-0 but it was Golf Club B’s Fletcher Hodgson who shocked the home side with a superb win in frame two.
At 1-1 Alan Moore excelled to put the Cons side back in front at 2-1 and with Dave Holland winning a closely contested fourth the Division One side reached the unassailable position of 3-1.
The final frame of the match proved to be one of the most convincing as Ryan Barker hit top form to galvanise the Cons victory in style and finish the match as 4-1 winners. Workington Golf Club B still move up one place in Division Two to fourth sitting on seven points.
Finally, Workington Veterans Club A climbed to the top of the Division Two table with a thumping 5-0 away win against fellow Division Two side, Maryport Social.
A contribution of 57 with his very first visit to the table saw Vets A captain, Kevin Basnett, make it 1-0 and with team-mate Paul Mostyn impressing in frame two the scoreline soon moved to 2-0.
Mark Tunstall was quickly into his stride in frame three that ultimately resulted in an uncomplicated victory to put the Vets B side 3-0 up.
Frame four produced a close contest but with Mark Tatton taking the frame on colours followed by another Vets B win in the last the town side delivered a 5-0 whitewash.
Vets A sit at the top of Division Two on 16 points while their opponents drop one place into fifth staying on six points.
