Whitehaven beat the weather – and Fulwood – to collect the only win in the weather-hit West Lancashire League.
With all the other games postponed Whitehaven were able to play their game at Fulwood and they were able to record a fine 2-0 win.
Fulwood had started the day in fourth place so this was a commendable effort by Whitehaven who have been putting in some promising performances in recent weeks.
They have actually had a testing four weeks with games against the League’s top four clubs.
They narrowly lost twice but picked-up a good point against second-placed CMB and have followed-up with this win over Fulwood.
The sequence is completed this Saturday with a home game against third-placed Lostock Gerards.
It had been an end-t-end first half at Fulwood which produced a number of chances for the home side.
But the half ended with Whitehaven taking the lead. Their high press forced a mistake when a short back pass was intercepted by Kian Goulding who coolly slotted home to give the visitors an interval lead.
Whitehaven didn’t sit on their lead at the start of he second half and some great work down the left from Goulding set-up Josh Hilton to double their advantage.
Then it was down to a string of great saves from keeper Tom Fowler and sterling work by Whitehaven’s defensive unit that the west Cumbrians held their lead.
With 20 minutes left a Fulwood player was shown a red card for a last man foul and that gave Whitehaven some breathing space.
They managed to see out the rest of the game even though the ten men pressed them all the way and went close with a shot against the post.
