Veteran referee Mike Firby will be back in action on Saturday in charge of a Counties 1 Cumbria game.
It’s good news because the septuagenarian had to abandon his game at Workington’s Ellis Sports ground last Saturday because of mild hypothermia.
Workington and Egremont had played 68 minutes of their League game when Mike had to call a halt. The game had been played in atrocious weather conditions and Mike was suffering from mild hypothermia.
“I wasn’t able to continue but a big thanks to both the clubs involved as I was well looked after and was fine later, just a bit embarrassed.
“It must have been an age thing so I will definitely wear my woolly hat next time,” he said.
Mike is in charge of Saturday’s Counties 1 Cumbria game between Penrith 2’s and Keswick 2’s this Saturday and is also doing a junior game on Sunday.
Workington Zebras have no game this week-end so finished off 2023 with their seventh defeat of the season, going down 24 – 10 to Egremont as the result will stand although ended 12 minutes early.
Joseph Moore and Jamie Wilson helped themselves to two tries each for Egremont, while Chris Crutchley added two conversions.
For Workington, Rob Scott scored his 10th try of the season and Keelan Morris went over for his maiden try in Zebras first team colours – despite the result, he will remember this day for a very long time indeed.
Workington are back in league action on January 6 – weather permitting – when they host Wigton – but before that there will be the traditional “Men v Women” charity match at The Ellis on Wednesday December 27, with food, bingo and entertainment to follow afterwards.
Kick Off is at 1pm & Tickets are £10, with all proceeds divided between Andy’s Man Club and Mind Cumbria – the official charities of the Zebras and the Finches respectively.
