Workington Comets have signed Craig Cook as number one and captain for their return to the Championship next season.

It will actually be Cook’s third stint with the Comets, the last in 2017 but also from 2009 to 2011 – but the first at the new Northside arena.

A former Speedway Grand Prix rider (Craig actually qualified for the 2018 SGP series as a Comet back in 2017), Great Britain International, two-time CLRC/PLRC winner, and 2017 British Champion (also in his time as a Comet in 2017) amongst many other prestigious accolades in the sport he joins Sam McGurk as the first two riders announced in the team building for 2024.

Workington Speedway promoter, Andrew Bain is thrilled to have Cookie onboard for 2024.

He said: “To say we are all delighted is an understatement! Craig is a class act and pure box office on a speedway bike.

“With Craig coming back home, I am sure we are going to see the Cookie of old – and if we do it should certainly put backsides on seats and shouldn’t be missed!

“We have made a fantastic start to team building and our vision for 2024, and it’s certainly not going to stop here.”

Cook has actually ridden many laps around the new Northside Arena during practice sessions over recent months, so come next March he will already be at home and in not-too-dissimilar surroundings.

The new Northside track also isn’t too different from his former home Premiership track, Belle Vue.

Cook will join the Comets as captain for 2024 and with a starting average of 8.74.
