Refuse collectors in Eden

The firm which operates refuse collections in Eden said industrial action by workers has been resolved.

Urbaser issued a statement to say talks between it and the GMB union had been successful.

Workers took strike action in October and last month over issues including pay, conditions and weekend rates.

It involved union members in street cleansing teams, such as emptying public waste bins and cleaning public toilets, and those who clean at council-owned properties such as Penrith’s Mansion House.

Urbaser’s statement said: “The results of the ballot on the revised pay deal, which took place on Friday, have been confirmed, with a majority acceptance.”

Andy Turner, regional operations manager at Urbaser Ltd, said: “We are extremely pleased to have reached this agreement, especially with its timing being so close to Christmas.

“The industrial action, which began in October, marked the start of a lengthy and at times challenging process. Throughout this period, we have worked hard to strike a delicate balance between what is feasible and what is fair. This agreement is a testament to the hard work and commitment of all parties to find a resolution.”

Urbaser Ltd began a five-year contract extension to provide waste collection and street cleansing services for Westmorland and Furness Council in 2022.

Mr Turner said that despite some initial setbacks, the firm successfully maintained service delivery with minimal disruptions.

He added: “I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Urbaser team in Eden for their unwavering dedication and effort in ensuring the continuity of our services. This resolution not only provides peace of mind, it also allows us to enter the holiday season with a renewed sense of unity and positivity.”
