Kendal Town were taken all the way by Atherton LR before reaching the third round of the Macron Cup on penalties.
The Mintcakes had needed a penalty in the ninth minute of time added on to salvage a 4-4 draw.
Rob Wilson had been brought down in the box and after a nervous wait banged in the equaliser to take it to a spot-kick shoot-out.
This time Kendal had more in hand as they won it 4-1 with Wilson also among the four scorers for Jimmy Marshall’s team.
Marshall said: “It was a funny game we were 2-0 down after a poor 15-minute spell. Then we put in a great 30 minutes and scored three good goals to lead.
“Half time seemed to curb our momentum amd in the second-half we gave them a soft third goal and they went ahead with a penalty.
“But what really pleased me was how we finished very strongly, wanting to get something out of it and in the end won it.”
Bailey Kenny, Paul Jarvis and Patrick Allington had put Kendal ahead after their early set-backs and then Wilson got them out of jail with the penalty deep in time added on.
Last season Kendal were beaten in the semi-final of the Macron Cup.
