A public meeting is to be held to address speeding concerns on Walney Island after the local MP received a ‘flurry’ of emails about the issue.
Simon Fell, who represents Barrow and Furness, said he aimed to hold a public meeting in January to address the concerns of residents.
Mr Fell said: “Over the weekend I received a flurry of emails from concerned residents on Walney about speeding on certain roads.
“I have raised these concerns with Cumbria police and the highways team at Westmorland and Furness Council.
“I intend to organise a public meeting in January to meet with residents and to understand the issue better.”
Councillor Frank Cassidy (Walney Island, Labour), welcomed Mr Fell’s action.
Cllr Cassidy said: “The island’s Labour councillors work alongside our residents on a regular basis to address many issues of concern.
“In the past we have combined forces to bring about measurable improvements – including the installation of speed humps – which have helped to put a brake on boy racers speeding along Biggar Bank Road.
“It’s great to see our MP becoming involved and I feel sure my colleagues would be only too happy to discuss any fresh issues with Simon, our island residents, police and highways officers.
“That would include sharing a public meeting platform in the new year.”
It comes after a successful campaign from councillors and residents to install safety improvements on Biggar Bank Road led to the introduction of speed cushions, pinchpoints, warning signs and road safety markings, with work completed in 2021.
