Eighty-four passengers had to be evacuated from a Lake District cruise boat after smoke was spotted coming from its engine room.
Windermere Lake Cruises said at around 11.55am yesterday, Wednesday January 3, the smoke was detected on MV Swift as it approached Brockhole Pier.
It said: “The master deployed the ship’s on board fire suppression system and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service attended the vessel as a precautionary measure.
“There were 84 passengers on board, all of whom safely disembarked and then carried on their journey to Ambleside on another vessel.
“The cause of this incident is being fully investigated and MV Swift will be out of service until further notice. Scheduled services will be covered by the remainder of the fleet.”
The company apologised to passengers and said an investigation had been launched.
The 300-seat boat MV Swift officially went into service in 2020 and at the time was the biggest boat to be launched onto England’s longest lake in 80 years.
