Workington Comets have been handed a major boost with a two-year extension of their main team sponsorship deal with GT Tyres.

The local family firm, which has branches in Maryport and Carlisle and is currently working on a new facility on the Rosehill Industrial Estate, backed the Comets for their return to the sport at Northside last year.

That association will continue as the club steps up to the Cab Direct Championship in 2024.

Promoter Andrew Bain said: “The affiliation between Graeme Thompson (director) of GT Tyres and Workington speedway has grown and we are proud to have them back on board as our title sponsors for the next two seasons.

“Graeme and his teams do amazing work, as well as support the local community. He is as passionate about speedway as we are and knows what it means to West Cumbria to have the Comets back in town.”

Thompson added: “I’ve been passionate about speedway from an early age. I used to take my grifter down to Bank End farm and listen to Steve (Lawson) tuning the bikes. The general buzz around speedway goes back a long way in West Cumbria.

“I’m absolutely over the moon to be part of the Comets for the next two seasons. So good luck to the team and it’s fantastic to be a part of it!”
