Cumbrian sides battle to avoid relegation

Keswick and Upper Eden are both battling to avoid relegation from Regional 2 North alongside county rivals Cockermouth.

It looks as though it could go all the way to the last game as the Cumbrian pair seem to be involved in a survival battle with the north east pair of Morpeth and Stockton.

One of those four sides will join Cockermouth in being relegated at the end of the season.

So this week-end’s matches are crucial with both Keswick and Upper Eden facing fixtures where five point wins look essential.

Keswick trail Stockton by four points and they entertain the North East side at Davidson Park while Upper Eden make the short trip to Cockermouth who have not won a League game all season.

Northumberland exchange referee Will Lacey will take charge of the game at Cockermouth with Martin Maughan officiating at Davidson Park.

Upper Eden showed they are up for the fight with a crucial home win over Morpeth last week while Keswick were left kicking themselves losing 25-24 at home to Consett to a last gasp penalty.

The bottom five currently stands at – Stockton 34, Morpeth 32, Keswick 30, Upper Eden 30, Cockermouth 0.

Morpeth have a very tough task on their hands when they visit second in the table Northern.

After Saturday all will have four games left and there are some vital fixtures in which the relegation rivals clash. Morpeth’s games are all against teams in that danger area.

Stockton have – leaders Percy Park (h); Upper Eden (a); Middlesbrough (h); Morpeth (h).

Morpeth play – Cockermouth (h); Keswick (a); Upper Eden (h); Stockton (a).

Keswick’s games are – Upper Eden (a); Morpeth (h); Consett (a); West Hartlepool (h).

Upper Eden, who conceded a County Cup semi-final to concentrate on League survival have – Keswick (h); Stockton (h); Morpeth (a); Consett (h).

With all four clubs battling hard to stay at their current level there promises to be some hard-fought games between now and April 6.

Aspatria are not involved in this scramble to stay-up but a rather disappointing run of defeats has seen their hopes of a top three finish disappear.

They want to finish a decent season on a high though and have a home game this week-end against Consett (referee Simon Barker) but a tough conclusion to the campaign.

The Black Reds finish with – West Hartlepool (a); Durham City (h); Percy Park (a) and Middlesbrough (h) – certainly no gimmees there!

In Regional 1 North West Penrith have climbed well from the relegation zone and probably need a couple of wins from the last five games to confirm their safety.

They are now just nine points shy of Kendal in mid-table as the Cumbrian pair lie 6th and 7th.

The pair actually meet at Winters Park on March 16 but before then there are points to be won.

Aspatria entertain third-placed Blackburn this weekend while Kendal host Anselmians, who are one of four teams who look likely to fight-out the relegation issues.

Next week, ahead of the derby, it’s Penrith’s turn to take on Anselmians (they also meet in the Papa John’s Trophy) while Kendal visit Wirral.

In the Counties 1 Cumbria League leaders Carlisle have a city derby clash when they visit Creighton as they move nearer a swift return to the higher level. Jim Donald is the referee.

Wigton will continue their chase for runners-up spot at Hawcoat Park where Dan Shovelton is the man in the middle while St. Benedict’s, five points behind in third, entertain Aspatria 2nds with Paddy Loughran in charge.

The other games are: Keswick 2nds v Egremont (Craig Price); Penrith 2nds v Whitehaven (which will have Liverpool exchange referee Ben Davis in charge) and Workington v Millom (Alan Jenkinson).

At Newcastle Falcons Festival on Sunday there will be DPP squad games with Cumbria’s Under-16s team and other counties featuring.

Two Cumbria YMO referees Archie Harding and Nathaniel Mitton will be continuing their referee development under the watchful eyes of referee coaches and mentors Alasdair Boyle and Alan Jenkinson.
