Maryport Social produced one of the shocks of the season in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League.
The Division Two side beat the experienced Division One’s Workington Conservative Club by an impressive margin of 4-1.
Ben Scott opened up with a good victory on the last few balls in the first and with Andrew Sharp winning in convincing fashion in frame two Maryport stood two to the good.
A relatively straightforward victory for Alan Moore in frame three dragged the Cons side back into the game at 2-1, before a thumping win for Gary Miller in the fourth clinched the match for the Maryport side.
That was followed by a solid victory for Greg Todd in the last for rgw Social side and which left their higher tiered opponents in shock.
Flimby Social ensured they kept in touch as Division One title challengers with a 3-2 home win over Workington’s Veterans Club A.
A brilliant break of 83 from Flimby’s former county snooker champion Kevin Kirkham was more than enough to take care of the first frame and with Richard Kirkham quickly getting his opponent under his tactical spell in the second the Social outfit were soon 2-0 up.
Vets A super sub Paul Smith delivered a quality display to win frame three to pull it back to 2-1. However, with Sal Cakmak up for the job in the next, a victory gave Flimby an unassailable 3-1 lead.
The last frame of the match was purely a damage limitation exercise for Division Two leaders Vets A, and with Kevin Basnett producing a break of 36 he did just that to finish the match just one frame adrift.
Division One leaders Workington Golf Club A travelled to Whitehaven’s Rack Shack and with a dominant display they ran out 4-1 winners.
Mark Brasted kicked off with a resounding Golf A win for 1-0 but with Phil Denvir producing an upset in frame two the Rack Shack made it 1-1.
This loss seemed to spark something inside the Golf A side as a desire to win seemed to be ignited. A Simon Frazer victory soon made it 2-1 and as wins from Phil Sorfleet and Mark Cowen quickly followed the Golf A outfit turned an edgy start into a resounding match victory.
Division One’s Station Road Club made the short journey to Division Two’s Workington Golf Club B and with a 4-1 win the higher tiered side went away feeling pleased with their efforts.
At 1-0 down, due to the result of a high scoring victory from Karl Newton, the Station Road A side were clearly deflated but this was as good as it was to get for the Golf B outfit. Putting their first frame disappointment behind them wins for Mark Robertson, Tom Thompson, Darren Lawson and Chris Hunter cancelled this out in style to see them end up convincing winners.
Finally, the all-Division Two fixture between Workington’s Veterans Club B and Workington’s United Club B saw the latter nick the win 3-2 in what was a very competitive encounter.
A first frame win for Luke Richardson gave the Vets Club B the advantage but with United Club B’s Wayne Sinclair taking the second parity was delivered.
A Stephen Jackson third frame victory pushed United B to the front at 2-1, but back came Vets B with a Simon Tootle win to take the match to a decider.
The final frame saw a high scoring battle flow but as Adam Sowden hit form to take the win, the United B cueist ensured his team gained a well-earned match victory.
