Carlisle’s war memorial is set to be moved to a more prominent location as part of a major revamp of the city centre.
Cumberland Council is preparing to overhaul Market Square and Greenmarket, which it said would create a welcoming and lively space for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The relocation of the war memorial is part of the plan, with an agreement reached with the Royal British Legion to move it and its benches, to a more prominent space within the Market Square, the authority said.
It wants to enhance a 6,000sq m area with an events space. The authority has released designs for the space and wants people to have their say.
Proposals include benches which look like they are twisting out of the ground and walled seat elements, made with timber slats, will incorporate lighting.

The consultant’s integration of Carlisle’s heritage includes proposed etchings of ‘be just and fear not’ on selected steps and the potential incorporation of the city’s crest, decorated with roses and a central cross, replacing some of the drainage grating.
Cumberland Council confirmed four trees have been removed from the designated area – two were unhealthy and two were in the construction zone for the events space, it said.

It added that new trees and shrubs would be planted within the area.
A two-minute questionnaire is available for people to fill out at https://consult.cumberland.gov.uk/communications-and-marketing/market-square-and-greenmarket-regeneration/ and is open until Friday March 8 at 12am.
