Temporary traffic lights will be installed on the A596 in West Cumbria from next week.
The next phase of flood alleviation work in and around Flimby, near Maryport, is planned to restart from Monday, March 4.
Weather permitting, the A596 will continue to be accessible during the work under traffic light control, Cumberland Council said.
The traffic lights will be manually controlled from 7am until 7pm each day and will be placed on a timer outside of these hours.
The council said it advised people to plan their journeys in advance, allowing for potential delays.
It added that the flood alleviation initiative has achieved significant milestones, including diverting peak flows from Penny Gill to Furnace Gill, remediating an existing flood gate near the A596, upgrading surface water drainage systems in Coniston Avenue, constructing additional dams to regulate water flow east of Flimby, substantial replacement of a culvert at Bragg Beck, completion of Bragg Beck Culvert, installation of Penny Gill diversion culvert, and the construction of Penny Gill flood storage bund.
This substantial effort to alleviate flooding in Flimby and Maryport has been made possible through a £1.5 million contribution from the Environment Agency’s Flood Defence Grant in Aid fund.
