Solway Singers will be holding their next concert in May.
It will be held on May 11 at St Cuthbert’s Church in Carlisle and the singers will be accompanied by Borders Brass, an ad-hoc group of local musicians.
The concert will feature some of the greatest pieces from the English choral repertoire, balanced by some less well known pieces, performed under the expert musical direction of Edward Taylor.
In addition to the brass players, the choir, described by critics as a highly accomplished musical ensemble, will be accompanied by Jordan English (organ), Avril Tisdall (piano), and timpani.
The range of pieces will vary from David Briggs’ contemporary Ubi Caritas to Stanford’s Gilbert-and-Sullivan-esque Songs of the Fleet (baritone soloist Jonathan Millican); the well-known hymn Turn Back O Man (Holst) to Vaughan Williams’ setting of Walt Whitman’s metaphysical words Toward the Unknown Region.
The programme will provide a diverse experience from unaccompanied vocal pieces through to resounding works ringing with trumpet calls and organ fanfares.
Tickets are £12 each in advance and can be obtained from members of the choir or via the website solwaysingers.org
Tickets on the door will be available for cash only and will cost £14. Under-18s and full time students are free.
