Talented Austin Friars pupils stole the show at the recent Carlisle and District Music and Drama Festival.

The festival, first established in 1896, offers people of all ages the opportunity to showcase their talents in music, speech and drama to a panel of professional judges and a captive audience.

Austin Friars celebrated 13 first-place winners and 24 runners-up in categories including verse speaking, Bible reading, woodwind, organ, guitar and brass.

Charles Hattrell, director of music at Austin Friars, said: “I was thrilled to see our pupils taking the opportunity to perform in public and represent their school at such a prestigious and historical event.

“The pupils’ performances were absolutely magnificent and I am in awe of their dedication, perseverence and skill. Well done all!”

Ranulph Turton, an upper sixth student, said: “I was delighted to win the 15-18 year old solo brass, but surprised to also be awarded the George Memorial Trophy for having the highest brass score of the week.

“I’d like to thank Mrs Harris for her tuition on the soprano cornet, and Mr Hattrell for accompanying me.”

Fred Turley, a preparatory pupil, came first in solo verse speaking and said: “I was really nervous but it was exciting to hear my name being called when I won.

“My mum and dad bought me a Lego set because they were really proud of me!”
