
Workington’s United Club A beat their rivals United Club B, 5-0 in the L&L Property Contractors Snooker League to step up their title challenge.
With last week’s sole Division One leaders, Workington Golf Club A, going down 3-2 away to Station Road Club the United A side joined them at the top of the table.
A Dave Chapman victory got the United A side off the mark and with a thumping victory for Clive Lister to follow the Division One side went 2-0 up.
Mark Suitor played some steady snooker to make it 3-0 and it was followed with a convincing win from Peter O’Hagan the United A cueist to make it 4-0.
The last frame may have produced the biggest points total of the match for a Golf B player but with Andrew Mitchelhill more than up to the task the United A captain completed the whitewash for 5-0.
Workington’s Station Road Club A upset the form book in their home fixture against Workington Golf Club A as the fourth placed Division One side beat league leaders and current champions, 3-2.
A close first frame went the way of Golf A captain, Mark Brasted, for a 1-0 lead before Station Road’s Darren Lawson produced an imperious performance to pull back level at 1-1.
Tom Thompson won after a re-spotted black ball to give Station Road Club the advantage at 2-1 and a fourth frame win for teammate John Teasdale took the lead to an unassailable 3-1 scoreline as the Station Road cueist continued his in his excellent form.
Frame five still offered a point and it was Simon Frazer who took the initiative, as the Golf Club A side player reduced the damage to end the match 3-2.
Maryport Social are starting to put claim to a Division Two third-placed finish as a 5-0 whitewash against Whitehaven’s Rack Shack, who are one place below them, strengthened their case.
Victories for Ben Scott and Andrew Scott quickly put Maryport 2-0 up and with Andrew Sharp in equally devastating form the Social side stood three to the good.
A slightly tougher test for Gary Miller still resulted in a victory to make it 4-0 and with Greg Todd producing another brilliant win Maryport completed the rout.
Division One’s Workington Conservative Club demonstrated their determination to avoid relegation with a 4-1 home victory over Division Two’s Workington Veterans Club B.
Julian Plaza opened up with a solid win and as team mate Richard McCarthy repeated this feat in frame two Cons moved 2-0 ahead.
An excellent performance from Vets B’s Adam Hodgson halted the Cons charge to pull one back for the Vets but it was Cons’ Dave Holland who made sure of the match victory in winning the fourth for 3-1.
The final frame of the match saw the largest points total of the fixture add to Cons’ winning margin as Ryan Barker galvanised the result to finish the contest at 4-1.
Finally, Flimby Social continued to hang on to their Division One title challenge with a 3-2 win at Workington’s United Club B.
The industrious Richard Kirkham ground out a first frame win for a 1-0 Flimby lead and with a quick-fire performance from the opposite end of the scale Kevin Kirkham motored to victory for 2-0 with a 42 break to boot.
The improving Wayne Sinclair delivered another good win to drag United B side back into the match at 2-1 but as Geoff Banton reduced his opponent to just four points in the next the Social captain ensured his side went home victors for 3-1.
Flimby looked set to add to their points total in frame five however with Adam Sowden on top form he nicked the last to reduce the deficit for United B and end the match at 3-2.
